Custom Garage Door Springs in Scottsdale: A 730-Pound Silverleaf Door

Gecko Garage Doors recently completed a specialty spring project in the Silverleaf gated community of North Scottsdale for an unusually heavy residential garage door.

The 18×8 garage door weighs approximately 730 pounds and required four custom-made springs. Rather than using a standard replacement, the Gecko team created springs specifically for this door. Fabrication took approximately two hours, followed by about 3.5 hours on-site, where two technicians installed the new spring system.

Making the Custom Springs in Gecko’s Workshop

An important part of this project happened before the technicians arrived at the Silverleaf property.

Gecko Garage Doors fabricated the springs in its workshop specifically for this garage door. The process was captured on video, offering a behind-the-scenes look at a part of garage door repair most homeowners don’t normally see: creating springs for a door that requires a custom solution.

Once fabrication was complete, Gecko’s technicians brought the new spring system to the Silverleaf property and completed the installation.

When Might a Garage Door Need Custom Springs?

Garage door springs serve an important purpose: they counterbalance the weight of the door so the garage door opener doesn’t have to lift the entire load on its own.

Many residential garage doors can use readily available springs that are correctly matched to the door’s specifications. Oversized, unusually heavy, or custom-built doors, however, can have different requirements.

This can be particularly relevant in Scottsdale and North Scottsdale, where custom homes may feature oversized or specialty garage doors that don’t necessarily fit a typical residential setup.

Selecting the appropriate spring system involves looking at the individual door rather than assuming that a common replacement will work. Its weight, dimensions, existing hardware, and overall configuration can all affect what spring setup is appropriate.

If the springs aren’t properly matched to the door, homeowners may notice that the door feels unusually heavy, doesn’t stay balanced, moves unevenly, or appears to put excessive strain on the garage door opener and other components.

For specialty situations, Gecko Garage Doors can evaluate the existing system and determine whether an appropriate standard replacement is available or whether custom fabrication makes more sense for the application. For the Silverleaf project, that meant fabricating a custom spring system specifically for the door rather than relying on an off-the-shelf solution.

Garage Door Spring Replacement Isn’t a DIY Job

Garage door springs operate under significant tension. Attempting to remove, unwind, adjust, or replace them without the proper tools and training can result in serious injury.

The concern becomes even greater with an exceptionally heavy garage door. A door weighing hundreds of pounds relies on its spring system to help manage that weight during operation.

If a garage door spring breaks or the door suddenly becomes difficult to open, homeowners should avoid attempting to adjust the spring system themselves. A trained garage door technician can inspect the door, determine what it requires, and perform the spring work safely.
